I brought Nut Boy's ecocolumn home on Friday, and so far everything is still alive (except for one cricket that we replaced from Bob the lizard's food supply).
(Sorry about the poor photo quality--my camera and I couldn't quite deal with the condensation on the inside of the plastic.)
On the top level, amidst the dirt and leaf mulch, live two crickets, two sow bugs, and several different kinds of plants. Down below, in the aquatic level, are two snails, two guppies, and two plants (I'm sensing a Noah's ark theme going on here).
In theory this will be a closed ecosystem. The plants will provide oxygen and food, and various other critters will consume and recycle. All the water should stay inside to do the evaporation/condensation/precipitation thing. But, unfortunately, I'm afraid the balance will prove as delicate as the real world. Sigh. Perhaps the real lesson for our kids is how delicate our enviroment really is...

Saturday, like all fall Saturday's, was a day of football and cross country. Nut Boy went 45 minutes north with Squirrel Man to battle it out on the gridiron, while I drove an hour south to watch Squirrel Girl run in one of her biggest meets of the year.
That's over 280 high school varsity runners on the starting line, each and every one of them wearing aluminum spikes on the bottom of their shoes. You can bet that when my 5 foot 2 inch tall freshman started out in that pack she was running for her life. And she did pretty well--18th place--but was disappointed because their team came in second to their arch rivals. I, on the other hand, was proud as could be, and EXTREMELY happy she didn't get stomped on.

And I did manage to get a little work done this weekend. A few things that reflect my mood at the moment.
I have a few more ideas to embroider; I'll probably start putting them up in my shop on Monday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend--I hope the weather where you are is as glorious as it is here!
